Abraham’s son Isaac and his wife Rebekah had twin sons, Esau and Jacob.  Esau did not value his birthright as the elder son, and Jacob bought it from him for a bowl a stew.  Then Jacob tricked Esau out of his father Isaac’s blessing.  Jacob fled from Esau to his mother Rebekah’s family, and God repeated the promise to him as he traveled there.  Jacob, whom God renamed Israel, had two wives and two concubines who gave him twelve sons.  The descendants of these sons became the twelve tribes of Israel. The life of Jacob teaches us that although it may seem that some people get away with their sin, sin has consequences for everyone.
